Malaysian police in shock as crowds cheer criminals: report

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (AFP) - Malaysian police were shocked as people cheered while armed men robbed a goldsmith, days after similar behaviour in another part of the country when a mentally unstable man took a boy hostage, reports said Sunday. The Sun quoted Mangsor Ismail, police criminal investigation chief in central Selangor state, as saying a crowd of about 50 people in pubs and restaurants overlooking the jewellery shop viewed the robbery as "entertainment."

"This is the first time I have come across people who were rooting for the criminals. They watched the robbery, they cheered when the men escaped but now they refuse to assist in our investigations," he said.

Late Friday, four men wearing helmets, sunglasses and with handkerchiefs tied around their mouths took off with some 200,000 ringgit (52,632 dollars) worth of jewellery and necklaces snatched from two customers in the shop.

They were armed with automatic pistols and hammers. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, the newspaper said crowds of people clapped and jeered as a mentally unstable man took a schoolboy captive in the southern state of Johor.

The boy was freed after a four-hour standoff and the hostage-taker shot dead, the paper said.
