Dr Mahathir's Chinese blunder
Of late, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir has been committing a blunder-a-week. Mahathir's current and biggest blunder is in how he is handling the Chinese issue.
It all started in November last year when Mahathir said that the Chinese are more "practical and pragmatic" compared to the more "emotional" Malays. Mahathir's intention was to seek support from the Chinese voters.
After the elections were over, Mahathir realised that the majority of the Malays had deserted him. The Malays were also beginning to ask how could UMNO claim to be representing the Malays when UMNO retained power not through Malay support but from Chinese votes.
That was when Mahathir tried to win back Malay support by presenting the Chinese as a threat to the future of the Malays. And he did this by knocking the Election Memorandum that the Chinese presented to the government just before the elections - which Mahathir calls "the Chinese demands" just to show how militant the Chinese are.
UMNO then played up the "17 demands" issue and went into confrontation with the Chinese. They hoped that the Malays would all rally behind UMNO in defense of their "rights". What Mahathir did not mention was what these "Chinese demands" were and how they were a threat to the Malays.
And what are these so-called "17 demands" of the Chinese and how unreasonable are they?
1. Encourage racial solidarity.
2. Increase democracy.
3. Defend human rights and uphold justice.
4. Eradicate corrupt practices.
5. Implement a fair economic policy.
6. Re-evaluate the privatisation policy.
7. Implement an education policy that is more progressive and liberal.
8. Encourage the development of all cultures.
9. Protect the environment.
10. Modernise and develop new villages.
11. Formulate a “House for Everyone” Policy.
12. Protect Women’s Rights.
13. Develop a fair media.
14. Restore the confidence of the people towards the police.
15. Improve welfare.
16. Respect workers’ rights.
17. Help the aborigines become self-reliant.
Clearly these 17 points are not unreasonable and neither are they a threat to the Malays. In fact, the Malays too have demanded the same from the government. What the Chinese are asking for is an end to corruption, abuse, injustice, oppression, and many more transgressions.
That too the Malays want, and the Malays are asking for it through a movement called REFORMASI.
Mahathir is lying and twisting the issue to try to stir the Malays and make them unite under a common hatred of the Chinese.
Mahathir will fail, as the Malays cannot be united under a common hatred for another race. They can, however, be united under a common hatred for Mahathir - and that is what is happening now.
