Terompah Besi, UK The powers that be seem to be panicking over students' commitment to change the government. This is very apparent in the United Kingdom among students who are sponsored by various bodies. Entrepreneur Development Minister Nazri Aziz has already visited the UK in late January and is planning to come again very soon to meet with Mara-sponsored students. I travelled from Coventry to Edinburgh over 250 miles to attend Nazri's talk during a 'meet-the-students' event. Not surprisingly, this Umno minister again completely abused his position to ramble o要 about totally irrelevant matters. My friends and I were hoping to hear the minister talk about our welfare as students being sponsored by Mara. We wanted to hear him tell us what they have done to help us with our studies. But all we heard was a political mumble o要 things not connected to our academic life at all. Nazri used the opportunity to slam Yusof Nor and Wan Mokhtar Ahmad for imposing what he called a "ridiculous" quota (of 70 percent local intake) for the two MRSMs (Mara junior science colleges) in Terengganu. Of course, he claimed to be the champion who is brave enough to right their mistakes. He then tried to score points against PAS by accusing the latter of politicising the SAR (people's religious schools or Sekolah Agama Rakyat) issue. I actually agree with Nazri o要 this matter as unfortunately SAR has become a political matter. But I deplore the way Nazri abused the opportunity and forced us, sponsored students, to listen to his political speech. How dare he warned us against getting involved in politics? It was he who forced us to listen to his cowardly political speech for more than two hours. He had deceived us by saying that it was to be a meeting between sponsors and sponsored students. But it turned out to be about a desperate politician abusing his powers to force us to attend a political rally. And how na鴳e I was to think that we students are not supposed to be involved in politics. Now I understand what the sponsors mean when they warn us about this - students cannot get involved in any political party other than Umno. Nazri's (im)maturity was exposed even more when he was asked his opinion about Kelab Umno. Not o要ly was he clearly stunned that a young student was brave enough to stand up and ask that question, he couldn't even provide an acceptable answer. No o要e in their right mind would ever doubt the political nature of Kelab Umno, but of course no action would be taken against those involved in this club. o要ly those not involved in Kelab Umno would receive warnings from Nazri and his Mara colleagues. Now I have been told to attend another meeting with the sponsors next week. This time, parliamentary secretary in the Prime Minister's Department Noh Omar will be coming with Public Services Department (JPA), Mara, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Petronas and Telekom Bhd. I heard that students would have to sign the Akujanji at that meeting. And I read in the newspapers that a committee has been set up to monitor students' involvement in political activities. I cannot understand how they can waste money and resources on such activities. Can they not see that the more they oppress us, the more they curb our freedom, the more we will retaliate? I may stay relatively quiet but I will make my stance clear at the polling booth. I just want to focus o要 my studies and excel in my course. Please stop bothering me with all these political stunts. It was reported that two students' sponsorships have been terminated by Mara for their 'political activities'. Well, to me that is just another solid evidence that Umno is dying and they are trying to cling to anything they can hold o要 to. It serves as a very strong proof that this abusive and corrupt Umno regime cannot tolerate freedom of thought or speech. Umno seems not to care about our academic excellence but just wants to ensure its political survival. For that reason, I am convinced they must be replaced very, very soon. And I vow to do my best to ensure that they will be humbled.
