REQUEST FOR RESTORATION OF SERVICE TO MALAYSIAN REFORMASI WEBSITES

May I draw your kind attention to the above matter.

Since September 1998, the Malaysian people have fought to reform their country through a mass movement called "Reformasi". Because of the suppressive nature of the organs of the Malaysian ruling party, the mass media (namely, newspapers, television and radio stations) are completely under the thumb of the Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The people, whether they are members of opposition parties or even private individuals, have utilised the Internet as a method by which truth is conveyed to the general public. The Internet has become a vital part of Malaysian life. It is a boon to every freedom loving individual.

Terra Lycos, through its subsidiary, Tripod International, has played a vital part in Malaysian Internet growth by providing free web hosting to several sites dedicated towards the dissemination of truth. These "REFORMASI" websites have withstood threats and intimidation from the ruling party to encourage openness, democracy and freedom of speech.

On Saturday 17th March 2001 at around 1600 hrs GMT, Tripod International, suddenly and without any advance warning, pulled out the following websites:

2. Mahazalimtwo (mirror)
3. Mahafiraun 2020
4. Harakah Daily
5. Komentar
6. Pemantau
7. Minda Rakyat
8. Debat 2020
9. NT Zalim
10. Detik Daily
11. PAS Parit Buntar and
12. Tranung Kite.


All these websites are known defenders and champions of democracy against the ruling party of Malaysia. We are not sure whether the websites were pulled as a result of a technical error, or whether this was a deliberate measure on behalf of Tripod International.

The National Justice Party Youth Wing urges you to restore your service to these sites as soon as possible. Without them, no less than 250,000 ordinary Malaysians of all ages and beliefs lose their main source of reliable news and information.

If Terra Lycos has been at the receiving end of pressure from the ruling party of Prime Minister Mahathir then the company should make it known to the world the methods, threats and insinuations which it has received. We will give your company our full backing, for the sake of democracy and human freedoms, if you have been the target of such a campaign.

We urge you to contact the webmasters directly and ascertain for yourselves the truth of any allegation made by the Malaysian ruling party or its supporters against the "REFORMASI" websites. Further information regarding our struggle can be found on www.freeanwar.com, the director of whom was recently detained by the Royal Malaysian Police for presenting an alternative view to current political manoeuvers in this country.

We know Terra Lycos to be a strong believer in the potentials of the Internet. We hope that your company also believes in individual freedoms and the upholding of justice. We hope that you will give your best considerations to our request.
